The Fifth Northern Regional Youth Convention (NRYC- V) was held at St. Annes’s School Auditorium, Simla-Chandigarh from 2nd October to 4th October 2015. The NRYC takes place under the patronage of Regional Bishops Conference of the North (RBCN) (Youth Commission - CCBI) once in three years. 

The theme of the Convention was: “Keep Christ :Keep Going - Keep Growing”.

On the 2nd young people from four dioceses of the Northern Region (Archdiocese of Delhi, Dioceses of Jalandhar, Simla-Chandigarh and Jammu-Srinagar) gathered at St. Anne’s School. Inaugural ceremony was organized by the host diocese. Mr. Satender Singh Pal was the guest of honour. Most Rev. Franco Mulakkal, Chairman bishop of Regional Youth Commission, Most Rev. Iganatius Mascarenhas of Simla Chandigarh diocese along with Fr. Chetan Machado, regional youth director welcomed the chief guest and marched towards the auditorium. Youth presidents marched in contingents carrying their diocesan flags. Most Rev. Ignatius Mascarenhas invoked God’s presence following which Mr. Satender gave his message to young people. Most Rev. Franco Mulakkal addressed the gathering and enthused them. Simla –Chandigarh diocese performed at the inaugural session and guests were honored by the Regional Director. 

Fr. Charles Menezes, the newly appointed IYCS International Chaplain was felicitated by Fr. Chetan and Fr. Chetan was felicitated back by Fr. Charles for his recent appointment as YCS/YSM National Chaplain.

After the tea break, at 11:30 Fr. Charles Menezes took the first session. He spoke on ‘keeping Christ’ in our lives. He also stressed on making Christ the centre of our lives. This session concluded at 1 pm.

After lunch there was a group activity in which all the participants took part. Mr. Jose Jacob, former NEXCO of ICYM who is an entrepreneur, took an interactive session. He shared his God experience and the initiatives he has taken to support the community.

At 5:30 pm the Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Most Rev. Franco Mulakkal. In his homily he challenged the youth to change their ways and come closer to Jesus. Diocesan Directors of all the dioceses and many priests from the host diocese concelebrated. Liturgy was organized by the diocese of Jalandhar.

In the evening, there was a power packed cultural evening presented by the host diocese. It was an eventful cultural show showcasing the culture of Punjab. After dinner everyone went back to their dorms.

The second day of the convention began with the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Rev. Fr. Dominic Bosco, Vicar general of Simla Chandigarh diocese. In his homily he asked the youth to organize their lives and come forward to serve the Lord in various ways. The Liturgy was organized by Delhi diocese.

After the breakfast, Fr. Justin of Simla Chandigarh diocese took a session on enhancing our lives on the theme ‘keep going’. Fr. Justin spoke on our spiritual growth. He emphasized on the spirituality of the young people in the modern world. 

After a short break, Mr. Mathew Anthony from Delhi took a session. He spoke on evangelization. He asked the young people to experience Jesus in their lives by doing simple things. He asked them to remain focused.

In the afternoon, various interactive catechism sessions were organized in different groups on different themes. There were ten groups and priests from different dioceses interacted with the youth and clarified their doubts on various issues of faith & spirituality.

The second Regional Awards were presented during the award ceremony on the second day evening. Two young people from each diocese were chosen and were awarded for their contribution towards youth ministry. Fr. Sahaya Raj, former RYD of Northern Region and Sr. Gracy, Principal of St. Anne’s School were the guests.

After the award ceremony, participating dioceses presented their cultural shows. It was an eventful evening which saw young people from Delhi, Jalandhar and Jammu showcasing their talents and also culture of the place they came from.

After dinner, there was Taize prayer conducted by the host diocese. During the prayer there was provision for confessions. Young people participated in this prayer prayerfully and there was absolute calm. People departed to their venue after the prayer.

On the last day of the convention, day began with a praise and worship session by the youth of Archdiocese of Delhi. The last session of the convention was taken by Mr. James from Chandigarh. He challenged the young people to pray and study the Bible. He asked them to strengthen their faith and remain proud of their religion and Jesus based on the theme of the day “keep Growing”.

After this session there was a general assembly. All the participants met in their groups to share their ideas with one another and later they met diocese wise to do the evaluation of the programme. All the dioceses gave their report and evaluation. 

The concluding Eucharistic Celebration took place at 12:30 pm. Fr. Powlish, Diocesan Director of Shimla-Chandigarh Diocese, was the main celebrant and the Liturgy was coordinated by Jammu-Srinagar diocese. Fr. Chetan preached and spoke about responsibility and sustaining the spirit of this convention in the coming days. After the final blessing Fr. Powlish proposed vote of thanks followed by Fr. Chetan, who thanked all those who worked hard to make this convention possible. This was followed by the concluding ceremony of handing over the Convention candle to the next host diocese, i.e. Diocese of Jalandhar, who would host the next NRYC in 2018. The three day convention winded up with Lunch and farewell to one another.
