St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Chotparua, Raiganj

Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) West Bengal & Sikkim Region had organized the 6th Regional Youth Convention at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Chotparua, Raiganj from 19th to 22nd October, 2015. A total number of 530 participants from 8 dioceses attended this mega event.

The inaugural mass was presided over by Most. Rev. Vincent Aind (Bishop of Bagdogra) along with Fr. Gregory Monteiro (RYD) and other concelebrants. Soon after the mass the flag hoisting ceremony took place which followed by the inaugural ceremony. The day was concluded by a grand cultural program where each diocese performed some theme basedsurprising acts to enchant the youth and the dignitaries.






The second day began with the Holy Eucharist concelebrated by Most. Rev. Alphonsus D’Souza (Bishop of Raiganj), Most. Rev. Cyprian Monis (Chairman), Fr. Gregory Monteiro (RYD) and other DYDs were concelebrants. After the breakfast Mr. Rajesh Benjamin Murmu (Former NEXCO) took the first session on ‘Youth Empowerment’. After a short break the second session on ‘Socio-Political Leadership’ was conducted by Mr. AugustineLepcha (ADM) where he encouraged the youth to engage themselves in civil service and active politics.

After a deliciouslunchthe delegates were divided into 25 groups and sent to different pre-allocated spots for an interactive workshop based upon the previous sessions after which the secretaries from the groups had presented their reports. After a small tea break everyone was gathered in front of the Cathedral for the Taize prayer led by Fr. Gregory Monteiro. For many it was a first time experience and everyone felt the presence of Christ. During the prayer there was a provision for confession which helped many to come back to Christ.






The third day began with the exodus Rosary led by the ICYM North Zone Executives. After the breakfast the delegates were enlightened with a youth-friendly and entertaining session on the thrust‘Media Advocacy’ by Rev. Fr. Alex Gurung, from Darjeeling Diocese followed by an effective and touching session on ‘Youth to youth Evangelization’ by Mr. Victor Colins, where he shared his testimony about experiencing Christ and made the youth feel the presence of Christ.
After the Lunch, all the delegates were led to the hall where Sr. Teresa, SCCG shared about Year of Concreted life and then girls were led to the classroom to see the exhibition on consecrated life while Fr. OnshuGayen conducted a session on vocation for the boys. The session was lively and heart touching.

Fr. Santapan, the Vicar-General of Raiganj Diocese celebrated the concluding mass where the choir was led by the North Zone (Bagdogra, Darjeeling &Jalpaiguri). He based his sermon on the Theme of the Day ‘Jesus, The True Leader’.

As St. Paul says “Laborers deserves their wages”. The award Ceremony was the main attraction of the day. The youths who had contributed and given their best time to help the movement in their respective dioceses were felicitated with the Regional Youth Award and Lifetime Achievement Award by his Excellency Bp. Alphonsus D’Souza, Rev. Fr. Gregory Monteiro (RYD) & Ms. AnanciaFernandes (RYLA).






The award ceremony was concluded with a talent show where the youth showcased their potential through some extraordinary solo and group acts and before leaving for supper all the REXCOs, animators and religious present were felicitated for their contribution towards the success of RYC VI.Soon after the delicious supper, the delegates were led to stunning campfire. The delegates along with the executive members, animators and religious danced around the fire to multi-linguistic tracks performed by the delegates from different diocese. After an amazing hour of dance and entertainment, the day was called to an end.    







The fourth day began with the Thanksgiving mass concelebrated by Fr. Gregory Monteiro,after the mass Fr. Sunny Varkey (Treasurer – Diocese of Raiganj) & Fr. John Kennedy (Parish Priest) were felicitated for their support and outstanding contribution to the success of RYCVI.Soon after the breakfast the Peace Rally with the theme ‘Youth For Peace’ was organized where the delegates had walked four kilometers to promote peace which was concluded by lowering of the flags and a vote of thanks proposed by Fr. Santapan.







The 6th Regional Youth Convention was winded up with a lunch and tearful farewell.
